The Denver Nuggets have signed former Florida Gulf Coast shooting guard Brandon Goodwin.

Due to an exception on the team, the Denver Nuggets have signed some depth in the guard position in Brandon Goodwin.

To the naked eye, this signing is confusing at first, due to the amount of players the Nuggets already have in the locker room.

“How can they make that signing?” You may be asking, and that’s what I intend on answering today.

The Nuggets made the signing due to an injury exception, which means if a team has four or more players that will be inactive for at least two weeks. In Denver’s case, they have Will Barton, Isaiah Thomas, Michael Porter Jr, and Jarred Vanderbilt that are hurt, and with Gary Harris still struggling to get back, the team felt it needed some depth.

The only stipulation that comes with signing a guy in this scenario, is that whenever a player is activated that was injured, he is required to go back to the G-League.

Now, if he balls out and shows that he deserves a spot on the roster, then a player would have to be waived or traded to make room for him.

So why would they go and get a guy like Goodwin? Well, I’m glad you asked. Goodwin has been BALLING OUT in the G-League for the Memphis Hustle, averaging 23 points, four assists, and five rebounds per game.

According to RealGM, the young gun has shot over 50 percent from the field, and 33 percent from deep as well.

The starting shooting guard in Gary Harris’ absence? Well, there hasn’t really been one. They’ve been starting two small forwards in his place, with Torrey Craig playing the two and Juancho Hernangomez playing the three.

Aside from them, Malik Beasley has played plenty of minutes, Monte Morris has seen plenty of time with other guards as well and DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell has been in the locker room, but not playing much.

With the addition of Goodwin, Akoon-Purcell can go to the G-League and get minutes with the Delaware Blue Coats, while Goodwin takes his place and possibly plays some minutes in the rotation.

Goodwin is an athletic guy, hailing from Florida Gulf Coast, that has a lot of heart and grit in his game.

Fun fact, he is the first member of the Eagles alumnus that will ever see an NBA roster.

While this is a little late, I want to take this opportunity to welcome Brandon Goodwin to the NBA, and to the Mile High City!
