The Denver Nuggets are off to a slow start this offseason, but they've made a few moves that make sense. They added Marvin Bagley III as the backup center for Nikola Jokic, and they let Jonas Valanciunas go because they had Bagley. Plus, it made financial sense given that cutting Valanciunas would save the Nuggets substantial cap space. But the newest report has left fans scratching their heads, and some are just downright mad and upset.
In fact, we can't even link to or publish what some fans are saying on X/Twitter about the report from Jake Fischer that the Nuggets are -- checks notes -- looking to add more frontcourt depth. Wait, what?
"They brought in Marvin Bagley to be a backup center, but I do still think there's some thought in Denver about finding some more frontcourt depth," Fischer said.
Why on earth are the Nuggets looking for more frontcourt depth when they have a huge hole at the backup point guard spot? The Nuggets front court is already loaded and deep enough, but all they have behind Jamal Murray is Tyus Jones! Are the Nuggets even going to try to find another point guard?
What are the Nuggets even doing right now?
The Nuggets' front-court depth isn't an issue. Sure, they don't have the best depth, but they have bodies for the depth.
As currently constructed, the Nuggets, of course, have Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon as the starters. On the bench, they have the newly added Bagley, who can back up both of them. They just signed second-round pick Trevon Brazile to a long-term contract. Yes, it gets thin here, but they have Zeke Nnaji and DaRon Holmes II next on the depth chart. That's five bodies in the front court, with Cameron Johnson and Alpha Diallo having the ability to play the four as well.
But at point guard, they've got Murray and Jones. That's it. No other primary ball handler except perhaps point-center Jokic, or point-forward Peyton Watson if they successfully bring him back after his long, unrestricted free agency holdout.
Fans want to hear about the Nuggets fixing that issue, not just trying to find someone a little bit better than Nnaji on a much cheaper contract. The Nuggets have got to course correct soon and start figuring out who they can add at point guard. Russell Westbrook is still available!
But adding more frontcourt help? Are they already preparing for more injuries from Gordon? Make it make sense as to why the Nuggets aren't all in on trying to find a backup point guard.
