The Denver Broncos just opened training camp to prepare for the upcoming NFL season and unveiled a beautiful, state-of-the-art practice facility. It's definitely the best practice facility in the Mile High City, and the Nuggets should be green with envy over it. Especially since they don't have one, and the one they use is getting a cute little upgrade into what amounts to the Nuggets practicing in a small fish bowl.

The Nuggets are still practicing in what is basically a glorified high school auxiliary gym at Ball Arena, the same practice facility that they have been using for the last 26-years since Ball Arena opened. Not having a new, state-of-the-art facility is one of the reasons fans and pundits alike point to how cheap the Nuggets ownership group, Kroenke Sports Entertainment, is.
In fact, it was one of the first things that Michael Porter Jr. noted when he was traded last summer to the Brooklyn Nets, who have two courts to practice on.
The Nuggets only have one court to practice on, but it's getting an upgrade of its own. KSE is putting in an observation deck for fans to watch the practices, at a screaming total of $440,000.
The Nuggets need to do more for player comfort
The training facility is one of the most important amenities that teams have. Having a new state-of-the-art one ranks high on the list of wants for players when they are checking out other franchises. Player comforts, like having the new facility, were ranked the highest by a long shot when players were asked what "the smartest teams spend money on, beyond player contracts," by the Athletics anonymous end-of-season player poll.
And it's not just so the Nuggets can attract new talent, but for the betterment of the talent on the team already. Nikola Jokic, the best basketball player in the world, had to develop his game in the side gym. Maybe the crowded space helped him and his passing game out? Probably not, but you get the point.
We've been hearing from team president Josh Kroenke that a proper practice facility has been in the works for years, but it's continually being held up by "zoning efforts." Perhaps he should use the connections that the Broncos used to get the ball rolling? But that may force the Nuggets to spend some money on a new facility. So he probably won't.
But kudos to the Broncos for giving the Nuggets something to aim for when their facility does finally get built. It sure is a beautiful complex.
