Nikola Jokic set to take on the Avengers from Team USA on Sunday
By Ben Handler
Sunday is the first day of Olympic action for Denver Nuggets’ superstar big man Nikola Jokic and Team Serbia. They’ve gotten a tough draw, starting their campaign off against the United States, but this Serbian team is no joke.
Jokic obviously leads the charge, but they have other NBA players in Bogdan Bogdanovic, Vasilije Micic, and others, plus a bevy of other successful professional players in Europe. This is a good team that has a good chance to medal, largely thanks to their reigning NBA MVP.
Team USA is stacked with NBA superstars
Team USA isn’t carrying any Denver Nuggets but they are loaded with many of the biggest names in the NBA. Led by LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, the US also boasts three current champions from the Celtics in Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White.
The US team also has Joel Embiid, Devin Booker, Anthony Edwards, Bam Adebayo, Anthony Davis, and Tyrese Haliburton. The whole squad is chock full of former MVPs, current All-NBA players, and future Hall of Famers. It’s no wonder why this team is the favorite to win gold in Paris.
When and how to watch USA vs Serbia
But they’ll have to earn it, and their first test comes on Sunday with Jokic and Serbia. The teams will square off at 9:15 MDT and the game will be broadcast live on NBC and the Peacock App. It’s the second game of Group C as South Sudan pulled off the upset win over Puerto Rico early on Sunday morning.
The other Nuggets star in Paris, Jamal Murray got his Olympic career underway on Saturday. Team Canada pulled out a close win over Team Greece in Group A play. Murray didn’t look particularly good and struggled to get into a rhythm playing off the bench, but did sink two clutch free throws in the final seconds to seal the game for his team.
It has barely been 24 hours but the Paris Olympics and the basketball tournament are already off to an incredible start. This is going to be an excellent two weeks of basketball as we are going to be treated to many of the best players in the world leaving it all on the line for their countries.
