Social media goes crazy for Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic bromance

Saturday saw a ceremonious send-off for one for one of basketball’s greatest European players, Goran Dragic. Dragic has now officially retired from the game at 38 years old and he went out in style with a retirement game that took place Saturday night in his home country of Slovenia.

The game was a charity event consisting of Dragic’s former teammates and NBA legends. The event was a beautiful ending to a great career and brought out stars of the game from all over the globe.

Jokic and Doncic steal the show

But during and after the game, all anyone could talk about was the overly friendly relationship between current stars and participants, Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic. The Serbian, Jokic and Slovenian, Doncic were teammates in the game and seemed to be thick as thieves.

The Nuggets star was acting the playful older brother to Luka, and appeared to be very loose and comfortable, and having lots of fun. Of course the engagement and banter between the two quickly led to conjecture and speculation as social media blew up, mostly suggesting these two European superstars are destined to team up in the NBA before long.

This may seem like a pipedream in the moment, both players are locked into longterm max contracts and there has been no reason to think either player would leave any time soon as the Mavericks and Nuggets have been the past two winners of the Western Conference.

But still, it’s fun to dream about a magical lineup featuring two of the best players in the world, two offensive maestros who also happen to be buddies and share a background from a similar geographic region.

There’s nothing NBA fans and social media users love more than speculation about player movement, so Saturday gave them an incredible opportunity and fans were out in full force; loving it.

We had fans from the Nuggets and Mavs both pining for their teams to add the opponent’s superstar and those same fans getting defensive about people suggesting the opposite. Of course, there were wishful fans from the usual big market teams praying these two will join up in New York or LA.

But most of all, there just seemed to be a genuine appreciation for two incredible basketball players having fun. It was a joyous occasion all around and an excellent way to put a cherry on top of a wonderful career for Dragic.
